From Coach John Schmitdke:
When we came out of the Fargo Dome at the end of a long day on the mats, a perfect rainbow greeted us with an unbroken arch over the building – a bit of Hawai’i on the northern prairie.
It should look like Hawai’i in North Dakota because Hawai’i wrestlers owned the mats today.
We brought 8 ladies and 7 will take home high medals as All Americans.
That was so much fun; let me write that again.

Look at the number of pins we had against top-notch competition. Our ladies wrestled with confidence, determination, and great skill. Coach Ku’u and Coach Dany did a wonderful job of preparing our ladies for the nationals.
We can’t wait to go to bed because when we wake up the ladies get to wrestle again.

Congratulations to all the girls who did extremely well & represented Hawaii!
But also my hats off & congratulations especially to ALL the boys too (most are first timers) who fought their hardest & who had divisions whose numbers spanned the ENTIRE country (eg. Cass made All American in Cadet greco in a division of 57 boys; Bryant fought in Cadet FS division w/92 players (that’s right 92 give or take 1); Ryan fought in a division of 58 boys in Jr FS 112; David fought in the Jr FS 119 division of 76 players where he won 3 but got eliminated after 2 losses. Sean got eliminated (had a previous injury), Brady (1-2) & Todd (2-2) won some but then got eliminated in the 125 Jr FS division of 91 players! Sorry don’t have all the numbers for all the boys (you can check out their pull sheets at themat.com as the numbers tell the story) but I think considering what they were up against, the boys did extremely well but next time will have the experience & further their skills to compete in the finals! That’s a fact!
It’s worth pointing out just how big (and tough) this tournament is — check out the size of the weight classes above – 91 wrestlers at 125?! And weight classes with over 120 wrestlers is not out of the norm.
Not only is this the largest wrestling tournament in the world, the caliber of competitor is exceptionally high. A wrestler can go 6-2, beating state champions and All-Americans, and still not place. Earning a medal in Fargo is truly a huge accomplishment.
Sorry – my bad forgot to mention Marcus won 4th in Jr GR in a div of 59 (give or take 1). Congratulations to Marcus too!
Congratulations to the ladies who “dominated” hopefully more will come out next year.
Yaaaaaay Ladies!! Your wrestling ohana is watching the posts and cheering you on from home. Go get ‘um. We’ll watch for your rainbow tomorrow.
Thank you, coaches John and Jimmy for keeping us updated and inspired.
