UPDATES

Midland University freshman Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Kamehameha ’11) won his first match 8-6 as the Warriors went on to place 9th at the NAIA National Championships on March 3.

Menlo College junior Drake Medeiros (St. Louis ’09) won two matches by decision (3-1, 6-2) as the Oaks finished in 23rd place at the NAIA National Championships on March 3.

At the 2012 Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championships on March 3, Iowa State freshman Shayden Terukina (Kamehameha ’11) placed 4th at 133 lbs. nearly missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Pacific University women wrestlers Jordyn Lee (Fr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Andrina Ramos (So., Kahuku, Hawaii) earned national championships in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s Women’s Nationals (March 8-10) two lightweight classes to lead the Boxers, while Megan Chun (Fr., Aiea, Hawaii) and Rustee-Ann Johansen (Fr., Hilo, Hawaii) earned runner-up placements to earn All-America distinction. Also at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s Women’s Nationals, Lindenwood University – Belleville wrestler Mei Ling Keiki (Pearl City ’10) captured a national championship at 176 lbs. Click here for article from Lindenwood-Belleville

At the 2012 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships held on February 25, Johns Hopkins freshman Evan Johnson (Punahou ’11) won his opening match 3-1 at 285 lbs. and helped the Johns Hopkins team to the team championship.

Oshiro Thriving at Maryville

Here’s a great feature article on Brandon Oshiro (Maryknoll ’09), now wrestling at Maryville University in St. Louis, MO.

When Coach Mike Denney was tasked to rebuild the wrestling team he knew he would have to leave no stone unturned in his effort to recruit the most talented kids around the country to build a top-notch wrestling team. However, even he was somewhat surprised when he ended up recruiting Hawaii native Brandon Oshiro.

Steve: Can you tell us a little about your hometown?

David: My hometown, Honolulu, was a great place to grow up in. Hawaii itself is very diverse, yet not too large, which allows for pursuit of multiple interests.

Lee captures U.S. Open wrestling title


Moanalua High School graduate Stephany Lee won her first U.S. Open wrestling title by upsetting World Champion Iris Smith in the 158-pound final Saturday at Cleveland State’s Wolstein Center.

Lee earned a decision over the top-ranked Smith, by scores of 1-0, 5-0. Smith was seeking her fifth Open title.

There were 21 champions crowned in Cleveland, seven each in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle.

U.S. Open champions in freestyle and women’s freestyle advance to the finals of the World Team Trials in Iowa.

Lee’s Sunkist Kids won the women’s team title.
