Tuesday July 16 2013

Mark your calendar Hawaii wrestling fans, history was made today!
Joshua Terao  won a Junior National Greco Roman title, for the first since
Travis Lee in 2001.
Teshya Alo also made her mark at Fargo by becoming a double National Champion.
After winning the Cadet title on Saturday, Shya moved up  to the Junior
division  today and set a new level of achievement in the world if women's
wrestling!
Team Hawaii's phenomenal girls team had 5 more All Americans:

Maia Panthadora 3rd
Kristin Yamasaki 3rd
Thai Ha Sloan 6th
Shannon Paaina 6th
Rebekah Johnson 8th
Walking around the campus, in the cafeteria, even in the dorm elevator,
wrestlers were asking me about that really fast National Champ at 120,
the  double National Champion girl and her All American teammates!
Hawaii's wrestling is being looked at a bit more seriously after today,
thanks Josh, Teshya and girls!
I am going to get a few hours sleep, then take the Cadet boys over for
their 7am  weigh-in! Tomorrow will be the first session of  Cadet boys
freestyle and the  girls duals, it will be a busy day; 9 girls and
13 boys will be wrestling, the  six Team Hawaii coaches will get help
on the floor by a couple of the Junior  boys! Chaperone/Parent
Alan Yoshikawa set up text message groups so those in the  stands can
communicate with us on the floor all at one time, it worked good  today!
Stay tuned, I will blog more tomorrow!

Monday July 15 2013

Coach Tyler and I got up early and took the Junior boys to weigh-in, all of them
made weight!

It was a busy day on the floor, 5 Junior boys wrestling session 1  Greco,
Liam Corbett in session 3 of Cadet Greco and 10 Junior girls first  session!
There was so much wrestling that I am still digesting, sorting through brackets
and notes! Here are some highlights:

Liam Corbett finished 8th place earning All American honors!

Joshua Terao advances to session 3 tomorrow and depending on results
tomorrow  could place very high!

Six girls advance to session 2 tomorrow.

Teshya Alo made the crowd go: ooooohhh,  not once but twice in one match
hitting 5 point belly to back sups!

Many if us were on the floor from about 7am to 9pm, pretty long day, but it flew
 by because we love wrestling!

Stay tuned I will blog more tomorrow!

Up early with the Cadet boys for weigh-in
at the Fargodome; despite some  struggles
in the last couple of days, everyone made
weight!
Fargo is tough, arguably the toughest high
school tournament in the world!

Today  the Cadet boys learned just how tough! Thirteen Cadets started the Greco Roman
competition, only one made into the third session tomorrow.
Liam Corbett with a  4-1 record today, will compete tomorrow for All American status!
Jordan NG,  Joshua Crimmins, Matthew Aguigui and Zachary Diamond all got wins but
eventually  were eliminated with 2-2 records.
The day was busy with coaches scrambling from  one mat to another as the wrestler
came down on the floor. Chaperones in the  stands tracked the mat assignments on
line and communicated by Radio to help the coaches!
In the evening the team had a practice before dinner! In the cafeteria  plans
were set for tomorrow's Junior Greco and Junior girls weigh-ins and  competition!

Stay tuned, I will blog more tomorrow!

Up at 6:00 am for a wake up walk around campus. Trained with Team South Dakota in the early morning and again in the afternoon. Team Hawaii wrestlers got to mix it up with some new training partners and got some new coaching perspectives!

Late in the afternoon we got word that Team Missouri was on campus! Team Hawaii coaches met up with them in the wrestling room and scheduled a practice for tomorrow morning! I sat through the whole practice and absorbed what I could from Coach Gary, some of it coming back to me from the last time I saw him 5 years ago. Before lights out, Coach Corbett conducted a meeting and announced tomorrow’s itinerary. We will be in Fargo tomorrow afternoon!

7-12practice with south dakota

Friday July 12, 2013

Up early training on a full mat with Teams South Dakota and Missouri, Greco Roman Master Coach Gary ran the practice. The girls practiced earlier.

Auntie Joyce packed lunch for the wrestlers as they packed their gear for the bus ride to Fargo. The bus was about an hour later than we expected, other than that the journey went as planned! Our two independent travelers: Teshya Alo and Joshua Terao met us at the Fargo Dome for team pre-tournament registration. Everyone got settled into their dorm rooms, made their first trip to the cafeteria then finished the day with a light practice! All the coaches went to Walmart except me, don’t tell Coach Corbett but I let the wrestlers stay up late, but at the first complaint from Team Nevada coach up stairs I told the boys that’s it and off to bed they went! Tomorrow boys get to sleep in, their first practice not until 10:00 am,  girls take an early college scouting trip! Our 2 Cadet girls: Miranda Oda and Teshya Alo wrestle tomorrow, their division starts at 2:00 pm! Stay tuned, I will blog again tomorrow

MAHALO for your reports, Coach Mac!

Sunday July 7, 2013
Team Hawaii checks in at the Honolulu International Airport for the long journey to
the mainland to compete in the 2013 USAW Cadet and Junior Nationals. After a
careful head count by head coach Kevin Corbett, the wrestlers, coaches and
chaperones make their way through security and board the first of two flights.
This year Team Hawaii has 3 wrestlers from Kauai, 2 from Maui and 1 each from
Molokai and Hawaii Island. Twenty  two wrestlers from Oahu complete the team of
29 Hawaii grapplers, 11 girls and 18 boys.

Monday July 8, 2013
Despite a couple of delays, Team Hawaii makes it to Brookings South Dakota just
about 2 hours past the planned arrival time! The team gets checked in to South
Dakota State University Abbott Hall dormitory, and assembles outside for a
distance run before dinner! After dinner Coach Corbett conducts a team meeting
and lays out the schedule for tomorrow!

Tuesday July 9, 2013
By 6:30 am the team is on another distance run before breakfast! After  breakfast,
we have our first practice in the SDSU wrestling room! Any one who  has been there
in the summer knows, it is hot! Team Hawaii starts to become  acclimated, and time
change adjusted. After lunch we are back in the wrestling  room for our second
practice. Coach Corbett and staff assess the performance  and are generally pleased
with the first couple of practices. Several wrestlers  check in with the SDSU trainers
for minor injuries, everyone is released and  expected to practice tomorrow! After
dinner, Coach Corbett conducts a meeting,  lays out the schedule for tomorrow, and
reviews the weight check roster; several  wrestlers do an evening run for calorie burn!
As I type this, I hear Coach  Daniel Johnson walking the dormitory hall announcing
lights out in 15 minutes.  Tomorrow morning we will be up bright and early for another
day of training!

Wednesday July 10, 2013
Up at 6:00 am for another distance run before breakfast! First practice of the  day
was focused more on technique with less live wrestling, Coach Corbett decided to
slow the pace down a bit! Second practice was coached by two very  tough SDSU
wrestlers who generously donated their time! It is always good to  learn new
variations of technique, especially from guys who can demonstrate  with precision!
At just about dinner time we got the word that Team South Dakota was on campus!
Coach Corbett, Coach Tyler and myself met up with the  coaching staff in the
wrestling room and planned a practice with them tomorrow!  After dinner Team Hawaii
went to the movies!
