Excel Wrestling Returns to Hawaii – June 2012

This year marks the 11th year that Excel Wrestling has reached out to our Hawaii wrestlers.

Coach Steve Knight from Excel Wrestling has done camps and clinics on several islands over the years and brings some great talent with him in coaches and wrestlers.

This summer, he and his son Evan Knight, a 4 x HS All American, 2 x Iowa State Champion currently wrestling for Cornell University will have along with them NCAA Champions Anthony Robles from Arizona State University and JP O’Connor from Harvard University. Robles won the 2011 NCAA title at 125lbs and is now a nationally recognized motivational speaker. O’Connor won the 2009 NCAA title at 149lbs and is currently an assistant coach at Harvard. Coach Knight himself wrestled on the US National Team, was an Olympic Team alternate, US Pan American Gold Medallist and Iowa State Big 12 Champion and NCAA All American.

The Excel Staff will be running camps this summer on Maui, Oahu and the Big Island. Don’t miss an outstanding opportunity to work with some of the best in our sport!

Schedules are as follows:

Maui location – Lahainaluna HS, June 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th
Oahu location – Punahou HS, June 18th, 19th, 20th
Big Island – Konawaena HS, June 21st, 22nd, 23rd

Jesse Jantzen to Lead 2012 Iolani Wrestling Clinic

HUAWA’s First Grappling Tournament – March 26

Hawaii USA Wrestling is sponsoring it’s first grappling tournament. The tournament will be Saturday, March 26 and begin at 9:00am at Mililani High School Gym. Weigh-ins are on Friday 6:00p – 7:30p or Saturday 7:00a – 7:45a.

FILA rules will apply and all competitors must have a 2011 USAW card and you can get one at the door for $35.

Competitors can take advantage of the advance online entry fee of $50 by going to this web site. $60 registration fee at the door ends at 7:30am on the day of the tournament.

Excel Wrestling is returning to Hawaii for it’s annual training camp, Thursday July 1st – Saturday July 3rd at Punahou School (Forrest Hall).

Steve Knight has been a member of 2 US Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Coaching Staffs, was the 1992 Pan-Am Games Champion, and a Big-12 champion for Iowa State.  He’s come to Hawaii every summer for the past eight years and has been influential to a number of teams, including Lahainaluna and Punahou.

Wrestlers of all abilities are welcome but those that have a solid grasp of the fundamentals will get the most out of the camp.

Sessions times
5-8pm Thurs and Fri (July 1-2)
Sat 9-11am and 1-3pm  (July 3)

Showers will be available and recommended between Saturday’s sessions. Bring your own lunch and drinks.

Hawaii AAU Wrestling Tournament – Saturday May 15

When: Saturday, May 15, 2010

Where: Lahaina Civic Center

Weigh-ins: 8 am. When the last wrestler in line is weighed in,
weigh-ins will be over.

Mats: 8 surfaces, 4 whole, 4 1/2 mats. Last year we had 6 surfaces.

Divisions: Menehune 2004-05, Bantam 2002-03, Midget  2000-2001, Novice 1998-1999, Schoolboy 1996-1997* Note 1995 8th graders may wrestle in the Schoolboy division. You must put 8th grader on their weigh-in card.  These divisions will all wrestle folkstyle.

High School 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992* Note 1991 can wrestle High School if they are seniors.
Open High School & Open will wrestle Freestyle.

Format: We will start with Menehune and go through each division, then come back to Menehune. No weight class will have over 12 wrestlers. We will group as many girls together as we can, but there are no guarantees boys will not be paired with girls. Make sure you mark your girls on the weigh-in card. Last year we had 16 all-girl weight
classes.

Last year we had 80 total weight classes. AAU Regional Championship medals will be awarded to the top 3.

All competitors must be AAU members. You can register for AAU at the tournament for $15. If you register online prior (suggested), you will pay $12. Go to aausports.org and follow the prompts. Our club code is: HIWRTEYKB1.

You can print out your cards after you register and bring them to the tournament. If you don’t have your AAU card, you will be charged $15. If you have your card, the tournament is free. We ask that you support the concession stand.

Coaches: Please let us know if you are planning to attend so we can make club signs for our “Tournament of Champions” entrance.

2010 Iolani Wrestling Clinic – June 7-11

  • University of Missouri has finished in the top-15 at the NCAA Championships for six straight years, placing as high as 2nd.

The format of the Iolani Clinic includes:

  • Intense work on developing the skills of age group wrestlers
  • Instruction on core strength development
  • Live competition between the campers
