UC Davis – A Message from Coach Zelesky

Dear Wrestling Supporters,

It is with great regret that I write to inform you that UC Davis Athletic Director Greg Warzecka has announced the discontinuation of wrestling at UC Davis.  This came as a shock to our student-athletes, staff, and especially myself.

I was told last fall that no matter what may come to be, football and wrestling were safe at UC Davis.  As a program, we have had the second highest fund-raising numbers (behind football) the last three years, (averaging $65,000/year), the highest alumni/donor support, and one of the most profitable per contest gate of any sports.  Each of these criteria were suppose to be examined when determining which programs to retain.

The problem is both a monetary issue and a Title IX issue.  Since the official announcement, I have had numerous calls from people that are adamant about combatting both ends.  Financially, several key UC Davis Wrestling supporters are already inquiring about the dollar amount needed to reinstate the program.  On the political front, National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) President Mike Moyer has already stated that the NWCA will not allow this decision to stand.  These are both encouraging thoughts, but alone they will not be able to reverse the decision.

I expect there to be quite a backlash from the California wrestling community, as well as the national wrestling community, in the weeks to come.  If you would like your voice to be heard, please take the time to mail, phone and e-mail the individuals listed below.  Thanks again for your ongoing support.

UC Davis to Cut Wrestling

April 16, 2010 by
Filed under Wrestling, National News, College

Looks like California’s budget crisis (and the broader economic slow down) has claimed another wrestling program. UC Davis will discontinue four of its interscholastic athletic programs, including wrestling.

Hawaii wrestlers at Davis include Brandon Low (St. Louis ’06) and Michael Nakagawa (Kaiser ’09).

Glad to see Brandon Low (St. Louis ’06) is having a solid season so far. Ranked #15 nationally, he’s undefeated in the Pac-10 and helping a struggling UC Davis team stay in the hunt.

Bulla Tuzon (Baldwin ’05), wrestling for Dana College, won the 165 lb. championship of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Very glad to see Bulla’s having such a great year and a solid college wrestling career. He’s a terrific wrestler, a great young man, and it was a pleasure to have coached him for Team Hawaii his junior year.

Evan Knight to Wrestle for Cornell

Many of you out there have attended one of the Excel Wrestling camps, either here in Honolulu or on Maui (or in Colorado, Missouri, or Iowa if you’re reading this from the mainland) and had the chance to meet Evan Knight. These articles are a few months old, but I just came across them this afternoon.

Congratulations to Evan, oldest son of Coach Steve Knight.  Evan’s one of the most impressive high school wrestlers I’ve seen, not to mention one of the classiest kids I’ve met. It’s exciting to see he’ll be wrestling for a top tier program.

Appeals court: Women can sue UC Davis for Eliminating Wrestling

An interesting article from the today’s paper (via the AP). Another Title IX victory, this time in favor of wrestling. It seems (to me) that many Title IX enforcements come at the expense of wrestling (e.g. parity is achieved by dropping a men’s sport like wrestling).
