For the Johnson Family, Team Hawaii 2013 has been a true family affair.

Team Hawaii 2013 wrestler Rebekah Johnson captured an All-American 8th Place finish in the Women’s Junior Freestyle Division at 117 lbs.  She went on to help the Team Hawaii 2013 Women (which had to take forfeits in several unoccupied weight classes) to a very respectable 8th Place finish.

Rebekah’s Mother Joyce, and Father Daniel, not only coached  Rebekah and others to Fargo prominence, but were a vital and tireless part of this year’s entire Fargo operation.

Joyce and Daniel, who also head the Castle High School Wrestling program and the USA Wrestling “Knights Wrestling Club” based in Kaneohe, Oahu, lent their wisdom and time to the organization and coaching of Team Hawaii 2013 prior to its departure for mainland in early July.  Like the rest of Team Hawaii 2013 Coaches, they also made the trip at their own expense, lived in Team Hawaii 2013 dormitory housing, and traveled with the Team until having to return to Oahu today to attend a previously scheduled family member’s wedding.

Understanding that parents of wrestlers back home in Hawaii would be on pins and needles about the health and welfare of their children, Joyce in particular took responsibility for chaperoning our wrestlers with a special dose of parental caring; preparing meals, tending to the injured, running to the store and pharmacy at all hours of the day, and coordinating communication with the Hawaii Federation of USA Wrestling and anxious parents back home.

“The HFUSAW is really appreciative of all the preparation and work Dan and Joyce have done before and during the Fargo trip,” said HFUSAW President Ryan Sugihara.  “Joyce did such a great job of taking care of all the girls.  The only thing I’m sad about is that we hear Joyce ended up missing some of Rebekah’s matches while she was tending to other Team needs.”

Alan Yoshikawa, Father of Team Hawaii 2013 Member Tyler Yoshikawa, and a Team Hawaii Chaperon,  added a parent’s insight.  “If Joyce and Dan, or either one of them are with Team Hawaii next year, I would be VERY comfortable and at ease knowing my son would receive great care.   Looking at it as a first time Fargo parent, the way Joyce handled things for the girls was spectacular.  If I had a daughter, it would be easy to send her with confidence.”

“We need more people like the Johnsons involved in Hawaii Wrestling,” noted Sugihara.  “It’s not only Fargo where they’ve helped this year.  They were a key part of organizing the Hawaii folkstyle and Olympic style tournament season on Oahu, they serve on organization committees, they put on tournaments, and they helped run other Clubs’ tournaments.  They really care about what happens to wrestling in Hawaii.”

So, along with  Team Hawaii 2013, the HFUSAW takes this opportunity to say a huge MAHALO and CONGRATULATIONS to the Johnson Family.

Correction:  Rebekah Johnson is a rising Senior in High School and has one more year of High School AND Fargo eligibility ahead of her.  This article orginally mistakenly stated she had finished her High School career.  Our apologies for the error.

Thanks for all your help. I know Zack and Tyler enjoyed the food and especially thank you for looking after the bumps and knocks on Zack. It eased our minds having someone we could trust in our absence.
