ILH Inter/JV Tournament at Maryknoll

Attended the ILH Intermediate/JV Round Robin Tournament at Maryknoll on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Video was out of the question with split mats in a small gym but I did manage to get pics of notable matches.
Notes/Observations:
It was nice to see the future of Hawaii high school wrestling, and based on the turnout, the future looks bright. Kamehameha and Punahou fielded the largest teams, but all schools involved had nice numbers in their Intermediate and JV ranks.
The lone OIA entry was in the Intermediate ranks from Highlands Intermediate. This is a team that was started up by their coach Kai Kamaka and with young talent like Blake Cooper and Tristin Kamaka, and a number of other skilled wrestlers, this team shows a good indication of success to Pearl City high school’s wrestling future. I hope that other OIA schools in Hawaii will follow the lead of the Highlands team in forming Intermediate teams because doing so would be beneficial for all of Hawaii high school wrestling.
The Maryknoll gym was just too small for a tournament of that size. The gym is very nice and is suited for duals, but not for a tournament.

Intermediate
Josh Crimmins (Punahou) vs. Kamehameha wrestler (sorry no name)
Crimmins won by pin. One of the reasons that Punahou’s Intermediate team keeps providing a successful pipeline to the high school team.

Intermediate
Blake Cooper (Highlands) vs. Pac-5 wrestler (sorry no name)
Cooper won by pin. The 8th grader is the younger brother of Pearl City’s Ray Cooper and is proving just as dominant as his older brother.

Intermediate
Christian Agmata (Punahou) vs. Pac-5 wrestler (sorry no name)

Intermediate
Micah Leong (Pac-5) vs. Kamehameha wrestler (sorry no name)
Leong won by pin. I’ve noticed Micah before from judo where is a great judoka and from what I’ve seen, he is a great wrestler as well.

Darien Lau (Punahou) vs. Kamehameha wrestler (sorry no name)
Lau won by pin. One of the reasons that Punahou’s Intermediate team keeps providing a successful pipeline to the high school team.

Intermediate

Future stars of high school sports meet regularly on Saturday mornings at various Oahu Interscholastic Association high schools to participate in an all-day affair of amateur wrestling. This past Saturday at Leilehua High School, youths ranging from age four to 14 gathered to compete in one of the bigger tournaments of the season which features both girls and boys.
These tournaments, sponsored by the Honolulu Police Department as part of its Police Activity League program, take place each Saturday during the Fall and Spring months. The youths participate as members of teams from all over Oahu and location of the event changes each week. Admission is free and there’s plenty of mat action with up to six matches taking place simultaneously…

Ran across the stat sheet from the final PAL tournament of last year at King Intermediate. The Police Activities League puts on 6 youth tournaments throughout the year for the young wrestlers of Hawaii. It is pretty cool to see some of the names that will soon be hitting the high school mats, especially for those of us who are unfamiliar with these kids.
Note: I just listed results for the kids in the 11-14 year old age group.
