I was chatting with a reader the other day who pointed out that OC16 will be televising a band competition — which got him a bit riled. He was wondering (with all due respect to band) why a band competition is being televised and yet no one is televising the state championships for wrestling and judo in Hawaii. Perhaps someone out there knows what the audience reach of band is out there (or for that matter, high school volleyball, which also gets broadcasted locally) and how it compares to participation in wrestling & judo.

I asked the reader to share his thoughts on this:

OC16 has been a proud promoter of high school athletics for some time, but I ask to promote the little guys with big hearts. Wrestlers and Judokas across the state of Hawaii devote their lives to their sport as much as any other athlete in their respective sports. I believe that it is about time that these sports are given what they deserve. Wrestling and Judo has taken the backseat to almost every single sport that you can name. You give coverage to athletes of different sports but, I request that you give coverage to what I call, “Gladiators and Warriors.”

These warriors compete fiercely against each other to test each others stamina, speed, power, technique, and above all, heart. They compete in a sport where losses are taken much harder and the taste of victory is much sweeter. You can’t pass the ball when you’re in trouble and nobody throws a block for you; the result of a battle is determined by you, and only you. All the countless hours of training and studying tape, will be tested once you step onto the mat.

The Wrestler and Judoka not only worries about training in their respective sport, they worry about dieting. They try to stay on strict diets that’ll give them the edge to battle. Choices like ice cream and candy go out the window in the pursuit of perfection. Sacrifices need to be made to reach the ultimate goal, victory.

Wrestling and Judo are not just sports, they are lifestyles that only a select few can endure. OC16, ask yourselves this, “What’s wrong with giving these sports a shot to say, I AM”…..

So, mat fans…your thoughts?

From a friend of mine at SavingsPoint. This looks helpful to teams doing fundraising. And they pay the same type of interest you get at the bank:

For our youth sports community, fundraising is essential not only to offset the cost of travel to outer islands or the mainland, but also for teaching important life lessons.

A successful fundraiser is all about spreading the word to a larger audience. The social networking era successfully enhanced traditional fundraising efforts by allowing people to instantly and repeatedly announce their event to a larger audience. However, most fundraisers are still limited by geographical boundaries since family and friends from the mainland or overseas are likely unable to participate in localized fundraising events or sales.

Hawaii-grown company Savingspoint may have found a solution to this problem. Savingspoint is an online tool that enables users, such as youth sports teams, to create financial savings goals, share these goals with a broader audience via social networking, and to accept credit card and e-check donations from this broader audience. The result of this is an efficient and effective mechanism to raise money for specific events such as outer-island pre-season tournaments and States, and even national tournaments, while still maintaining the importance of teaching our youth valuable lessons on team building, patience, and financial planning.

Donations are held in a bank account on behalf of the user, where they are FDIC insured and earn interest. When it comes time to use the funds, they can be withdrawn and transferred directly to a registered bank account and are available for use within a couple of business days.

Tools such as Savingspoint are a great alternative to, or can at least supplement traditional fundraising methods by allowing teams to take advantage of social networks and also involve a broader audience in their fundraising efforts.

David was interviewed by Steve Fittery.

Steve: Can you tell us a little about your hometown?

David: My hometown, Honolulu, was a great place to grow up in. Hawaii itself is very diverse, yet not too large, which allows for pursuit of multiple interests.

S: Are there any memorable moments from your childhood?

D: I definitely remember my first Judo practice at Shobukan Judo Club in Hawaii. It was a great experience and it eventually lead to becoming a competitive athlete in both Judo and wrestling.

S: Can you tell us about your family members?

D: My parents are Lindy and Debra Terao. I also have a brother named Joshua.

S: Where did you attend high school? What were some of your high school accomplishments?

D: I attended high school at Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii. I won two high school wrestling state championships as well as four high school judo state championships.

S: What a stud! So what clubs/organizations have you been a part of in high school?

D: In addition to being a high school wrestler and judoka, I actively practiced jujitsu as well as breaking (break dancing) and surfing for fun.

S: Can you tell us why you chose American U?

D: American University offers a quality academic program as well as a wide range of courses, which for me is very enticing, since I’m not completely sure about what my major should be. In addition, Washington D.C. has so much to do and plenty of opportunities.

S: What is your favorite thing about Washington, DC?

D: First off, Washington DC is the American capital, which already makes it an appealing place to live in. In addition, Washington DC offers numerous internships and unique career opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else.

S: What is your favorite move that you use in order to take someone down?

D: A foot sweep to an ankle pick.

S: What do you like about wrestling here at American?

D: I love the atmosphere that’s present in the wrestling room. American has multiple All-Americans and many more quality wrestlers that in turn will help me better myself as a wrestler and an individual.

D: Something people may not know about me is: I started wrestling my freshman year of high school, and I was probably the least skilled kid on the team at that time.
