Hello to all. I am  head sensei at CHAMPION MARTIAL ARTS in Miami Fla. I have been involved with judo since the age of  7 (a long time). I have always known how good the Hawaii judo players are (some of the best in the US). However, I want to tell you about one of my own students. His name is Brian Abreu. He is a 12 year old blue belt with an impressive winning record. Brian was born in Dec. 1997, therefor almost always the youngest in his division, yet he refuses to let that disadvantage discourage him in any way. Through hard work and determination, Brian has accomplished alot in a short period of time. In 2008 he won gold at the jr US OPEN  and jr OLYMPICS (where he won BEST technique in tournament award). In 2009 he won silver at the scholastic national championship, and again, gold at the jr US OPEN and jr OLYMPICS (again winning best technique in tournament award). He also won gold at the FSJY (Florida state championship) and was selected as BEST in tournament, winning the coveted "RENE CAPO" sportmanship award. Brian ended the 2009 season ranked #1 and represented the US at the jr PAN-AM in Brazil, where he won a bronze. And so far in 2010, Brian won gold at the Florida open and the Scholastic national championship. Is there some one else out there with a more impressive resume the last 2  years? Who?Cool

Congratulations as Brian is an accomplished Judoka, but for impressive Resumes of Hawaii Judoka, there are quiet a number who have taken first at two national events in the past two years.

One notable  would be Mindy Chow – who has taken fisrt in Junior Olympic, Junior Nationals, Scholastic Nationals , in each of the past several years. She has competed at multiple Pan Am Games and Taken 1st. Then she competes with older judoka not only as an IJF junior, recently taking a 1st  at scholastic Nationals, and placed in the Senior Nationals. how many best techniques or fighting spirit, probably two many for her to count. Two years ago, she placed second at the Olympic trials then came home to graduate from Intermediate school. So yes a more impressive resume.

Of course her accomplishments could be overshadowed by the Alo sisters, who;s combined Gold medals in judo, wrestling and Jui-jitsu would literally exceed there weight.

Cool WOW!!! Very impressive, Mindy Chow. You say the Alo sisters are even more so? I was actually wondering about boys in Brians division though. Are there any standouts at the 96/97 u/36k. division ?

Two who come to mind in the lighter weights are Josh Terao and noah Pineda-Abaya. Both  have national credentials, but may be slightly heavier. Cassidy Oshiro is slightly older as a high school sophmore, but hasn't traveled to nationals.

Josh Terao and Noah Pineda-Abaya are excellent choices although I think Josh might be in a heavier weight class..I would like to mention two other kids and I appologize to the parents if offended them for mentioning their kids but I think these two boys are close to Brian's weight and age and that would be Cole Chandler from Hawai'i Tenri and Zorich Palimo'o from Shobukan.
