Ok , since no one started up any discusion yet about westerns I guess ill be the first to do so. There were some really exciting matches, 3 in particular that had me excited, again all involving mililani wrestlers. The first boys finals between Brayden Akeo and Treylan kobayashi was a pretty high paced match and had a lot of really good scrambles and as I predicted it was a close match with Akeo winning at the end. 135 pound finals was a lot closer than I expected with Tantog coming out on top with a close win over Tristan Kamaka with a late takedown in the third period. 140 final was a great rematch between Robert Kim and Keanu Richardson it went down to the wire with Richardson pulling out a controversal win. Thee mililani wrestlers continue to impress me week in and week out, and I'm in no way biast to them I have no ties to Mililani High.

Mililani is loaded, they have the best wrestling recruits in the state!

Not happening…..lets look at the JV program did you blink yup OK missed it.

Do you think the OIA finals will look similar to the West Finals?

Saw the East this weekend and all I can say is the West has a serious shot of winning all but a few

mililani jv had 1 champion and 2 runner ups

mililani varsity had 9 finalists, 5 champions (3 1st placers could have wrestled jv).  looks like they focus on their varsity.

get over the "recruit" whining i know several out of district wrestlers in other school.

campbell is still the powerhouse.  both jv and varsity. potentially years of dominance.  they have a good intermediate program too.  watch out ILH.

richardson was dominant all day killing his prelim matches and terrorizing kim in finals.  kido is super solid at 125.

pearl city looked very strong.  7 finalists, 2 champions, several other placers.  kamaka almost pulled off the upset of the night.  wrestled defensively but that's the pc way.  Iereneo looked good at 130.

Kapolei continues to embarrass themselves.  encroaching on the mat receiving warnings from the ref and taking food from another team.  good athletes they just need control.

fun tournament to watch.  some good match ups and no one letting the previous tournament results discourage tough wrestling.  nothing is in the bag for any wrestler or team.

Kapolei wrestlers encroaching on mat, you mean supporting teammates like most other schools do. Four varsity finalists (three champions. Their JV ended up with eight finalists. Hardly embarrassing. If wrestlers stole food, hopefully someone notified their coaches.

yes encroaching, lining up in front of the head table.  i didn't see anyone else warned by the ref and the match stopped to move the team, not that big a deal.  i wasn't really watching the jv too much.  no one cheers louder than PC, Aiea, Leilehua, etc. all from the bleachers.

i never said kapolei doesn't have stud athletes, they do.  especially the jv, wasn't kapolei jv champs a few years back.

i counted 7 jv finalists 4 jv champions, 3 varsity finalist, 2 varsity champions.  not what you said but still not bad. i wasn't commenting on kapolei wrestling only on their behavior.

enthusiasm is awesome, so is school pride.  breaking rules to do so is disrespectful.

My observations from this past weekend.

Team wise, Mililani sending all 9 of their boys varsity wrestlers into the finals is very impressive. If they had a couple more bodies they would have walked away with the team title….but they dont and they didnt. I guess they arent as good at recruiting as others on this board claim. Campbell on the other hand, while not as solid all around as Mlilani, made up for it with numbers. I believe they entered 13 out of 14 weightclasses. PC always has a pretty big team and a few studs just not enough this year to win the team title.

108- Akeo beat Kobayashi for the 3rd time this season. Again it was a very close match but unlike the last 2 matches this time they didnt go into overtime. I expect them to meet up 2 more times this year…in the OIA and state finals.

114- Isaac Diamond has yet to be challenged by anyone in the oia and should breeze through into the oia finals. Hopefully someone from the east can give him some competition before states.

120- Kano from Kapolei looked real tough beating Nagatori of Mililani by a good margin in the finals.

125- Kido from Campbell was very impressive. I expect him to win OIA's and do well at states. On a side note, I think Alex Ikei from mililani deserves some credit. He was getting beat pretty bad by Kido when he was slammed on his back/head. He used up all but about 5 seconds of his injury time. He could have taken the win by DQ if he had stayed down (This would have won mililani the team title as well) but he got up and continued to take his beating like a man.

130- Lereneo-Baring from PC looked solid on his feet vs Uyejo of Mililani. I expected more from Uyejo but it seems like anytime there is a pc kid in the finals the match gets magnified by the crowd and maybe the hype got to him. These 2 could meet up again in the oia finals.

135- Kamaka from pc wrestled a very smart match vs Tantog of Mililani. He knew he couldnt win if he went up and up with Tantog so he basically ran away and played defense and tried to counter off bad shots. I am amazed that he didnt get hit for stalling but like I said the pc fans are incredible at hyping up matches. The stalling, the crowd, and the continous bloody nose of Tantog made for a very exciting match with Tantog cutting Kamaka loose and scoring a late takedown for the win.

140- Another exciting and close match between Richardson of Campbell and Kim of Mililani with Richardson avenging an earlier loss to Kim. Richardson looked good on his feet while Kim looked better on the mat. I predict that these 2 will meet up in the Oia finals and possibly the State finals as well.

145- Cooper of PC defeated Okuda of Aiea 6-3. I dont think the score really reflects how the match went. Cooper looked pretty dominant but Okuda is funky and appears difficult to wrestle. This weightclass will have some interesting semi's at Oia's with lee-loy from moanalua and Rivera from farington thrown in the mix.

152- I didnt catch too many 152 matches but Watkins from leilehua looks pretty solid.

160- Penalver from Campbell breezed through and should do well at OIA and states.

171- After making the drop from 189 Sanchez from Mililani walked through the competition at 171 scoring the most team points of anyone in the tournament (27pts). I expect Sanchez to meet up with Grace-Reyes of Farington in the OIA finals.

189- Furuta of Mililani was very impressive. Especially if it is true that he missed most of the wrestling season playing for Mililani's jv basketball team who just ended their season last week.

215- Didnt catch too many matches in this weight.

285- same

@ guest, terroizing Kim in the finals? What match were you watching, it was a really close match with Richardson only winning by a takedown.

In regards to recruiting ask the kids from Team Hawaii, if their head coach has asked them to come over to Mililani:

lets take a look at weight and locations

Boys

108- Waianae

114- Kapolei

125 -Wahiawa

135- Wailua

140- Kaneohe

Girls:

Hawaii Kai

Pearl City

Half the boys and half the girls not from Mililani

Are these all Team Hawaii kids, "Coincidence I think not….." The Robinson's have blatantly abused their power and is making a mockery of the system.

Trojanman where are u getting ur facts from? Ur way off on most. The rest have legit district exceptions (like pleanty of other kids across the state). Yes the Robinsons recruit…they recruit their mililani hs kids to team hawaii. Not the other way around.
