Hi all. I submitted this to Mr. Billy Hull at the Star Advertiser just now, asking his consideration for inclusion in the Hawaii Grown section. I did the most research I could, but I'm not sure it is completely accurate. I am thinking it might help to get the word out to folks about how many Hawaii grown wrestlers there are at the college level. ( I have not completed a search of women wrestlers, nor the Olympic training wrestlers, but will do my best). I used Intermat.com and the school websites, but if there are other ways to follow these athletes, I am interested to know. Here's what I sent in:
Yakima Valley (Washington) Community College sophomore Daniel Agao (Moanalua ’10) went 2-3, with one pin, in the Clackamas Open on January 21.
Princeton junior Andrew Hirai (Punahou ’09) finished 1-2 at the Central New Jersey Open, held in November 2011.
Johns Hopkins freshman Evan Johnson (Punahou ’11) won by forfeit in a dual match against Washington and Lee on Saturday.
Midland University (Nebraska) freshman Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Kamehameha ’11) lost his match against Missouri Valley this past week. He is 4-10 on the year.
Menlo College (Calif.) junior Drake Medeiros (St. Louis ’09) went 2-1 at the Embry Riddle Mile High Championships on January 14. He is now 2-5 for the season.
Wesleyan (Connecticut) University junior Maika Nagata (Punahou ’09) won his match by pin at the Trinity College Dual on January 7.
Cornell College (Iowa) sophomore Jordan Ng went 1-3 at the William Penn Open on January 7, and is now 8-10 for the season.
Maryville (Missouri) University sophomore Brandon Oshiro (Maryknoll ’10) lost his match against Missouri Valley in a dual meet on January 26. He is now 5-8.
New York University freshman Patrick Sheehan (Punahou ’11) went won his matches against Coast Guard and Williams College at the Roger Williams Duals on Saturday, bringing his record to 18-13 for the year.
Number 1 ranked (Division III) Wartburg College sophomore Punahele Soriano (Kahuku ’10) went 4-2, recording 3 wins by pin, at the Matman Invitational on January 14.
American University freshman David Terao (Maryknoll ’11) went 5-2 at the Nittany Lion Open on December 12, taking his record to 10-2 for the year.
Iowa State freshman Shayden Terukina (Kamehameha ’11) lost in a dual match against Arizona State on January 3. His record is now 4-5 for the year.
David Terao is a graduate of Mid-Pacific. Cassidy Oshiro is from maryknoll. FYI.

Will it be in the newspaper?
I noticed a mistake after I sent it in: David Terao graduated from Mid Pacific '11 rather than Maryknoll. I sent it in to the paper yesterday.
I will call Mr. Hull today and ask about it. Will let you know.
Here is the information I sent in to the Star Advertiser today on women's college wrestling. Finding women's results was more challenging but using the Women's College Wrestling Association and the individual school's websites I got what I could. I coud not find recent results on Cianah Hee (Cumberlands). And, it seems Tani Ader (Farrington '09) and Chaelyn Tan (Kapolei) are not wrestling for Jamestown this year but are on the roster. I called the paper, and a staff member in the Sports department said they got it and are likely to run something, but he did not commit to how much or what would go in.
Pacific University (Oregon) sophomore Megan Chun (St. Andrew’s Priory ’10) finished 7th at the Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships held January 28. Also on the roster for Pacific are Chase Golden-Froelich (Kamehameha Kapalama ’11), Rustee-Ann Johansen (Kamehameha Hawaii ’11), Jordyn Lee (Castle ’11), Jodi Ozaki (Kealakehe ’10), and Adrina Ramos (Kahuku ’08).
Lindenwood University (Missouri) junior Courtney Kinimaka (Kapolei ’09) went 2-2 and placed 5th at the Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships on January 28.
Lindenwood University junior Seanelle Esperanza (previously Richardson) (Campbell’09) went 0-2 at the Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships.
Lindenwood University freshman Rachel-Jean Factora (Campbell’11) went 1-2 at the Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships.
University of the Cumberlands senior Ciana Hee (Kahuku ’08) placed fourth at the Missouri Valley Open held in November.
Jamestown College assistant coach Danyelle “Dany” Hedin (Kailua’04) led the Jimmies to an 11th place finish at the Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships January 28.
About the paper's coverage of college/national wrestling…I noticed they did not select wrestlers who competed but did not get a win (except maybe Courtney Kinimaka, who placed at the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships, but was not mentioned).
This week, Shayden Terukina wrestled for Iowa State in a tough dual but was not successful, Evan Johnson wrestled at 285 (!) for Johns Hopkins and lost but did not give up 6, Brandon Oshiro wrestled a dual for Maryville but did not prevail, and Drake Medieiros wrestled for Menlo in the California Collegiate Championships but did not place. I did not find results for David Terao, Punahele Soriano, Jordan Ng, Andrew Hirai, or Daniel Agao this week.
What I could find and sent in was this:
Men’s Wrestling
January 29-February 5, 2012
Midland University freshman Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Kamehemeha Kapalama ’11) won 3 matches, including an 11-4 victory over the 6th seeded wrestler, to finish in 6th place at the Briar Cliff Open on Saturday. (source: themat.com results)
Wesleyan University junior Maika Nagata (Punahou ’09) recorded a pin as he won his match in the Cardinals victory over Plymouth State in a dual meet on Saturday. (source: Wesleyan school website under ‘statistics’)
New York University freshman Patrick Sheehan (Punahou ’11) went 2-0, with one pin, in dual meet matches against Washington and Lee and McDaniel College. (source: NYU wrestling website).
Women’s wrestling
United States World Team member Stephany Lee (Moanalua ’02) won the Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational for the second time at 72 kg Thursday, recording three pins on her way to the title. (Source: trackwrestling.com and themat.com)
What was sent to the star advertiser today on this week's men's wrestling results. Good win for both Shayden against Wisconsin and Evan at 285!!!
Iowa State freshman Shayden Terukina (Kamehameha ’11) won, 8-5, at 133 lbs as the Cyclones won their dual match against Wisconsin, 36-3, in the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Sunday.
Johns Hopkins University freshman Evan Johnson (Punahou ’11) won his 285 lb match 4-2 as the Blue Jays lost their dual to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 21-18.
Forgot to add:
Andrew Hirai wrestled at 133 for Princeton.
Drake Medeiros wrestled at 125 for Menlo.
Maika Nagata wrestled at 141 for Wesleyan (up from 133)
None of the above 3 won their matches.
Daniel Agao (Yakima Valley Community College), Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Midland University (Nebraska)), Jordan Ng (Cornell College Iowa), Brandon Oshiro (Maryville University (St. Louis)), Patrick Sheehan (NYU), Punahele Soriano (Wartburg), and David Terao (American University) did not wrestle this week, so far as I can tell.
Here's what went to the star advertiser today, except the part about Evan Johnson wrestling in 4 weight classes. Through Sunday, February 19, 2012
Johns Hopkins freshman Evan Johnson (Punahou ’11) won by fall in the 197 lb weight class in the Blue Jays dual with the University of Scranton on Saturday. (He has wrestled at 174,184, 197, and 285 this year!)
Midland University (Nebraska) freshman Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Kamehameha ’11) beat the number 2 seeded wrestler on his way to a 5th place finish at 141 lbs. in the NAIA Northern Regional Tournament on Saturday.
Menlo College junior Drake Medeiros (St. Louis ’08) won two matches at 125 lbs and finished in 4th place at the NAIA West Regional on Saturday. He qualified for the NAIA National Championships to be held March 1-3.
This week's information to the papers….not to detract from States, so best wishes to all grapplers who put it on the line every day.
Men’s Wrestling
February 28, 2012
American University freshman David Terao (Mid Pacific ’11) won two matches by pin to place fourth in the 125 lb weight class at the National Collegiate Open on Sunday.
Johns Hopkins freshman Evan Johnson (Punahou ’11) won his first match, 3-1, at 285 lbs in the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday.
I think at least Drake Medeiros, and maybe Jacob Luning-Hoshino, qualified for NAIA Nationals this weekend. I don't believe any Hawaii wrestlers are going to DI, DII, or DIII nationals (please post if this is incorrect). Thanks!
Here's what went in to the Star Advertiser today. As far as I can tell, Jacob and Drake are the last 2 Hawaii wrestlers going. If anyone saw anyone else still in the tournaments, please let us know!
Congratulations to all the wrestlers and their families on a great season. Best wishes for a successful summer.
PS, If you want a great wrestling movie, rent "Takedowns and Falls" from Netflix or Blockbuster. It's a winnah!
Men’s wrestling update
3.4.12
Midland University freshman Jacob Luning-Hoshino (Kamehameha ’11) won his first match 8-6 as the Warriors went on to place 9th at the NAIA National Championships on Saturday.
Menlo College junior Drake Medeiros (St. Louis ’09) won two matches by decision (3-1, 6-2) as the Oaks finished in 23rd place at the NAIA National Championships on Saturday.
